Course content
Lecture topics: Assignment, content, formal requirements; Data - data types, data sources, basic methods of quantitative description of reality, data visualization, population, selection, descriptive statistics. Dependency analysis - correlation, regression. Comparative analysis - analysis of variance, comparison of two or more datasets, hypothesis testing. Categorical data analysis. Time series analysis (index analysis). Basics of scientific methodology with a focus on socio-economic geography, the position of socio-economic geography in the system of geographical sciences, geographical thinking, types of research. Geographical research in socio-economic environment, object and subject of interest, research plan, basic stages of research, credibility of research. Basic methods in socio-economic research in geography - classification of methods, methods of obtaining and organizing data, sources of data. Basic methods in socio-economic research in geography - data evaluation (geographical analysis and synthesis). Geographical dimension, classification, typification, regionalisation in socio-economic geography. Geographical thinking, cognition, development, theoretical background. Presentation of socio-economic research results - content and formal requirements of presentation, ethics of scientific work. Region, municipality, plant as an object of interest of socio-economic research. Exercise (seminar) topics: Introductory exercise: organisation of work in exercises, working with MS Excel. Data - data types, data sources, basic methods of quantitative description of reality - descriptive analysis, data visualization. Dependency analysis - correlation. Dependency analysis - regression. Comparative analysis - comparison of two files. Comparative analysis - analysis of variance, comparison of more than two datasets. Categorical data analysis - chi-square test. Time series analysis (index analysis). Examples of research report elaboration, project application preparation. Object and subject of research interest, formulation of research questions and hypotheses, research plan according to the assignment of the seminar paper. Sources of statistical data, methods of obtaining and organizing data, preparation of questionnaire survey, content and structure of questions, selection of respondents. Geographical analysis and synthesis, dimensions, classification, typification, regionalisation in socio-economic geography, examples of use in Czech geography, other geographical topics. Content, formalities of research presentation, ethics of scientific work, selected advice on approach to research and scientific work, information on choice of BP topic; discussion of seminar papers. Topics of the accompanying e-learning course: Content analysis in geography (example of protest event analysis, selected other visualization methods (cartogram).

Plan a solution geographic problem in socio-economic geography by individual, logically related, research phases.
Formulate choosing appropriate methods of socioeconomic research in connection with the research objectives, including basic geographical and statistical methods.

Prepare a presentation of research results with respect to the content and form of research while respecting the ethics of research work.
The student is able to use practically graphical and statistical methods to solve geographical problems and work with geographical issues.
