Course content
|
1. Defining terms - international politics and its actors, character of the international environment, what is foreign policy, goals and instruments of foreign policy, classification of foreign policies 2. International system and international regimes - examples of foreign policy of selected states (balance of power, nuclear bipolarity, etc.), international economic regimes, public international law 3. State as a foreign policy actor - character of modern state, classification of states and foreign policy, small states 4. Institutions of foreign policy-making - the state apparatus and decision-making processes (theoretical models of operation of administrative apparatuses, specific examples - USA, Czech Republic, the whole-of-government approach - PRTs ) 5. Internal influences on foreign policy - social forces and state foreign policy (interest groups, military-industrial complex, media, public opinion) 6. The individual a foreign policy-maker - representations of reality, misperception hypotheses, dichotomous classifications of personality types, characterology 7. Other foreign policy actors - international organizations, regional organizations and groups, NGOs, media, economic actors (specific examples will be provided for each type of actor) 8. Paradiplomacy - foreign policy of sub-state actors 9. Instruments of foreign policy 10. Diplomacy as an instrument of foreign policy 11. History of diplomacy and the evolution of diplomatic norms and rules, diplomacy in a globalized world
