Course content
Definition of basic terms - nation, ethnic and national minority, national movement, nation state, national self-determination, ethnic separatism and irredentism, ethnic conflict or genocide Nations and nationalism in the theoretical discussions of the 19th century - G. Mazzini, marxism, austro-Marxism, E. Renan, F. Meinecke, H. Treitschke. Nations and nationalism in the first half of the 20th century - M. S. Handmann, C. J. Hayes, H. Kohn. Main theories of nationalism I. - primordialism, perennialism and ethnosymbolism. Main theories of nationalism II. - varieties of modernism and postmodernism. Banal nationalism, critical discussion and confrontation of the main theories Nationalism and political theory I. - totalitarianism and Nazism Nationalism and political theory II. - decolonization, modernization, transitions to democracy Nationalism and political theory III. - democracy, multiculturalism and citizenship Nationalism in international politics I. - state sovereignty, national self-determination Nationalism in international politics II. - secession and irredentism Nationalism in international politics III. - nation states and globalization, religious fundamentalism Nations and nationalism in historical and geographic perspective - civil vs. ethnic, culture vs. state, Wilsonism, specific developments in Asia and Africa etc.

to present and interpret the definitions of nation and nationalism: the development of these concepts as well as the different concepts of nationalism from the beginning of modernity to the present

to define the changes of the definition of the concept of nationalism, the theory of nationalism and theorists of nationalism in connection with the changes of paradigms

to interpret contemporary theories of nationalism in the broader socio-scientific context

to classify different theories of nationalism according to the approach to solving specific problems of nationalism
to apply selected theories to solving a specific problem of inter-ethnic relations
to define specific problems of nationalism based on the analysis of the political situation in the selected region
to explain the causes, dynamics and outcome of a particular nationalism based on the use of a suitably chosen theory
