Course content
The main topics: - development of the rural settlement structure - Medieval transformation of the settlement structure - Early Medieval settlements - research of the deserted Late Medieval villages - archaeology of living villages of a Medieval origin - villages including standing Medieval houses - houses and village structure - house structure - seats of nobility - scaral obejcts and burial sites within the village - water supply and management - production and consumption in the rural environment - evidence of agricultural activities - rear of the rural settlements - field systems and problems of using other sources (hunt, fishing, outland use) First part of the course will focuse on South-west, Western and Northern Europe, above all the most significant sites will be presented: Italia (Brucato; San Vinzenzo al Volturno; Zignago), Spain, Portugal and Andorra (Miravet, Mollet, Uxó), France (Brébieres, Dracy, Rougiers, Trainecourt), Great Britan and Ireland (Buckquoy, Jarlshof, West Stow, West Whelpington, Wharram Percy), Denmark (Store Valby, Taarnby, Vorbasse), Sweden (Filborna, Sanda, Skramle), Norway (Forsand, Borg, Ytre Moa) a Iceland (Granasta-ir, Herjólfsdalur, Krisuvík).
