Course content
1. Introduction to theory in archaeology. The development of theoretical thinking on the basis of paradigm theory. Beginnings of research within the romantic and evolutionary paradigm of the 19th century (theories, methods, sources, personalities). 2. Culture-historical paradigm within European archaeology (theory, methods, sources, personalities). 3. Processual paradigm (new archaeology in the USA, analytical archaeology in the UK). 4. Processual paradigm (behavioural archaeology in the USA, ethnoarchaeology, experiment). 5. Processual paradigm (evolutionary and cognitive archaeology). 6. Processual paradigm (Central European examples and projects). 7. Post-processual paradigm (structural, symbolic archaeology). 8. Post-processual paradigm (interpretative archaeology, phenomenology). 9. Post-processual paradigm (gender, neo-Marxism). 10. Selected current trends (artefact archaeology, public archaeology, native archaeology, memory and historical heritage, current material culture). 11. The problem of the future paradigm in archaeology (so-called processualism). 12. The problem of the future paradigm in archaeology and international organizations (e.g. Theoretical Archaeology Group, European Association of Archaeologists, World Archaeological Congress).

  • Contact hours - 39 hours per semester
  • Preparation for an examination (30-60) - 50 hours per semester
