Course content
Possibilities and methods of research of rural settlements in the Czech-Bavarian border. Extinct and living villages such as archaeological, historical and ethnographic source Types of rural settlements and their genesis Formation of a medieval village house and estate Transformations of a village house and estate in the modern era, architectural forms and types Transformations of rural settlements in the 20th century Examples of research of rural settlements in the region Examples of research of defunct industrial buildings (mills, iron-mills, timber-mills, etc.) Examples of research of defunct religious buildings (chapels, churches and conciliation crosses, wayside crosses, etc.) Meaning of defunct settlement sites in historical memory.

Students learn about the problems of rural settlements, the history and forms of rural settlements and traditional architecture in the Czech-Bavarian border. They get advanced insight into the contacts and influences of neighbouring ethnic groups, differences and similarities of their traditional material culture.
