Course content
The course contains an extensive overview of the archaeological study of the Middle Ages, the Modern Period, and Modernity using examples of inspiring Czech and international scientific approaches and projects. Thematic areas: 1. Issues of studying medieval and early-modern settlement. 2. Archaeology of material culture of the Middle Ages, production and consumption. 3. Current research issues regarding the construction environment of the Middle Ages. 4. Research of movable artifacts of the Modern Period - case studies. 5. Archaeological research of the urban environment of modern Europe - case studies. 6. Archaeology of military conflicts of the Modern Period. 7. Industrial archaeology - current issues of European research. 8. Archaeology of former overseas colonies. 9. The issue of contemporary archaeology in Europe. 10. Archaeological opportunities for the study of totalitarianism and repression.

Learning activities and teaching methods
  • Preparation for an examination (30-60) - 60 hours per semester
  • Contact hours - 26 hours per semester
  • Individual project (40) - 44 hours per semester

Knowledge
Students have a grasp of archaeological theory and methodology (MA level).
Skills
Students understand scientific text in Czech and English and are able to interpret and critically assess its content. Students know how to utilize electronic information resources. Students are capable of working systematically and independently. Students are capable of formally presenting their research and leading scientific discussions.

Students have an overview of the contemporary possibilities and issues of the archaeological study of the Middle Ages, the Modern Period, and Modernity in a European context.
