Course content
- Africa v the era of decolonization, specific problems and issues of African independence - Separatist tendencies, federations, chieftainship, traditional and modern systems of governance in Africa - Socialism/capitalism in Africa, Cold War context, military dictatorial rule - Revolts, guerillas, reformist and revolutionary movements, civil wars in 1980s - Economic problems of Africa, HIV/AIDS, civil society - Democratization tendencies of the 1990s - Multiethnic states, political transformations, citizenship, economic progress in the 21st century

- to define key concepts from the thematical areas of globalization and development - to identify different theoretical approaches to the study of topics in the framework of development and globalization - to explain concept of colonialism and neocolonialism - to characterize colonial activities of Wester powers in Middle East and Africa - to define geographically and culturally Africa region - to characterize different types of development cooperation
Skills
- to interprete various perspectives and approaches to the study of colonialism and postcolonialism - to critically analyze discussions over colonial heritage in developing countries - to explain and use concrete theoretical frameworks for explanation of current social phenomena in former colonies - to classify different possibilities of the measurement of development - to define key security threats on the basis of an analysis of political situation in particular region - to evaluate on his/her own the signficance of development cooperation for the international system on the basis of acquired knowledge - to work independently with study materials - to use effectively modern ICT
