1) Europe and the Middle East: the history of conflict and cooperation 2) Development of European ideas about Islam 3) Orientalism and Islam 4) Medieval Arab science and Europe 5) Al Andalus and interpretation of history 6) Integration and institutionalization of Islam in Europe 7) Europe, Islam and secularism, multiculturalism 8) Forms of European Islam 9) Salafism in Europe 10) Transnational Islamic movements and Europe 11) European Muslim thinkers and the integration of Islam 12) Islam in the Czech Republic 13) Western from the perspective of Islamic East

Learning activities and teaching methods
  • Presentation preparation (report) (1-10) - 10 hours per semester

Knowledge
- to describe important events and processes of history of the Middle East and North Africa from the Middle age till present - to know European history - to identify and characterize the main elements of Islamic theology and law, to list important Islamic thinkers - to define and understand the basic differences between different Islamic schools or trends.
Skills
- to work individually with relevant professional literature - to analyse selected elements of local religious traditions on the base of knowledge of history and culture of the Middle East - to actively read, write and speak in English.

- to identify and characterize important events, processes and trends within the history of relations of Christian Europe and Islamic civilization - to interpret consequences of the various conflict between both entities, to characterize the development of their ideas - to characterize importance of Arab science for modern Europe - to describe immigration of Muslims in Europe and the progress of integration and institutionalization of Islam in European countries - to describe Muslim diversity in Europe - to know elementary related terminology (multiculturalism, integration, exclusion, assimilation, secularism, Islamophobia etc.)

- to search individually and work with relevant sources of information for the topic - to design and write a professional text about the selected topic from the field of relations between Europe and Islamic civilization - to discuss relation of modern European values and Islamic traditions
