Course content
1. Islam and theory of the state in history 2. Islam and modern theory of caliphate and Islamic state 3. Islam and democracy 4. Islamic law - the challenge of a nowadays 5. Islamic law - the transformation of basic sources and methods 6. Islamic law - contemporary transformation in fiqh 7. Islamic law - international law and situation in non-Muslim countries 8. Islam and human rights 9. Islam and minorities rights 10. Islam and women rights and status 11. Islamic economy 1 12. Islamic economy 2 13. Liberal Islam

Learning activities and teaching methods
  • Contact hours - 52 hours per semester

Knowledge
- to describe the history of Islam - to characterize the development of Islamic thoughts from the Middle Age, to name different theological and juridical school - to know and characterize important pre-modern personalities of Islamic thought and their works - to identify the main topics as well as different related approaches and argumentations - to characterize the religious scenes in Middle Eastern countries - to notice the importance of different Islamic thinkers outside of the region - to understand the relation between religion and political and social life in the region - to define the basic concepts of Islamic law

- to identify and interpret differences in approaches, programmes or legacies of different clerics, thinkers or organizations on the basis of the written sources - to use critically sources and related professional literature for their interpretation and argumentation - to evaluate usefulness or relevance of different theoretical approaches for research of the contemporary Islamic religious scene in the Middle East - to use effectively modern information technology - to use actively English written and spoken

- to list the most important personalities of the Islamic thought in 20th and 21st century, to describe their main attitudes, approaches and arguments - to identify the main trends of thought in the contemporary Islam, to understand its context on the basis of analysis of texts - to know and explain different approaches of Islamic thinkers or activists for important concepts, ideologies, social issues etc., including related terminology and specific argumentation

- to discuss actual topics related to current roles of Islam in the Middle Eastern societies - to use critically relevant sources and resources for the support of their conclusions - to interpret differences between "Islamic" and "Western" by the interpretation of specific terms or ideological systems - to discuss theoretical and methodological frameworks for research in given topics
