Course content
1) Europe ? Enlightenment rationalism ? Judaism ? Jews. Mendelssohn, Spinoza. 2) Maria Theresa and the Jews. Reforms of Joseph II. System patent. Anti-Judaism. Reform Judaism. The beginnings of assimilation. 2) The year 1848/1849 and Jews in Europe. Karel Havlíček Borovský and Jews in the Czech lands. 3) The completion of equal rights for Jews in Austria and its response in the majority and Jewish world. 4) From anti-Judaism to modern anti-Semitism in Europe and the Czech lands. Philosemitism in Europe and in the Czech lands. Ritual murder in Europe. Revival of the Jesuit legend about Šimon Abeles. 5) Integration, assimilation and changes in the relationship to Judaism in the Czech lands until the creation of the Czechoslovak Republic I. 6) Integration, assimilation and changes in the relationship to Judaism in the Czech lands until the creation of the Czechoslovak Republic II. 7) Cradles of Zionism in Europe, its relation to Judaism. Zionism in the Czech lands. 8) The First World War, the emergence of nation states in Europe and the Jews. 9) The Czech-Jewish movement in the First Republic in the context of European assimilationist movements I. 10) The Zionist movement in the First Republic in the context of the world national Jewish movement I. 11) The Czech-Jewish movement in the First Republic in the context of European assimilationist movements II. 12) The Zionist movement in the First Republic in the context of the World Jewish National Movement II. 13) Disintegration of Jewish life in Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia.
