Course content
1. Southern part of Arabian Peninsula, origin of writing, political groups of the North and central part of the Peninsula, preserved inscriptions, influence of the antique culture and Aramaic from the North, Pre-Islamic "buffer states", Pre-history of the old Arab poetry, poetic forms of the Pre-Islamic period, qasída and its structure (nasib, wasf, fakhr, madih), written fixation of the old Arab poetry, the authenticity of later pozdějších anthology, the most famous anthology. 2. The oldest poets (Al Shanfari, Al Muhalhil) and poets represented in the collection Al Mu´allakat with examples (Imru´ulkajs, Tarafa, Antara Ibn Shaddad, Amr Ibn Kulthum a Harith Ibn Hilliza, Zuhair, Labid Ibn Rabi´a). 3. Quran as a landmark of the old Arab literature with the analysis selected texts, poetic means in Quran - anaphor, epiphora, oaths, chorus, parable, metaphor etc., specifics of the rhymed Quranic prose. 4. Early period of Islam - history excursion, general characteristics of poetry of that period and three types of poets, examples (especially Ka´b Ibn Zuhair). 5. Umayyad period and cultural conditions, in general, love poetry, panegyric and pamphletic, changes of traditional genres and independence of some of them (ghazal, naqida, kamriya), Al Akhtal, Al Farazdaq a Jarir with examples. 6. Love poetry in Umayyad period, urban lyric of Medina and Mecca with examples (Umar Ibn Abi Rabi´a, Al Ahwas), Bedouin love lyric (udhrijští poets, Majnun and Layla and other archetypes of the love couple). 7. Prosaic creation in Umayyad period with examples. Hadith, sira a maghazi. Folk creation (Luqman - on of the legend heroes of the Pre-Islamic myths and legends). 8. Abbas period (cultural synthesis, adoption of the antique and Hellenic heritage, translations from the Pehlevi and influence of the Indian and Persian culture, kalam, fiqh, philology, development of the Islamic historiography). 9. Three epochs of development of the literature in Abbas period (modern direction, Neoclassicism, mannerism). Modernists - Abu Nuwas, Abdallah Ibn Al Muqaffa´ with examples (Kalila and Dimna). 10. Neoclassicism and tendency to mannerism - Abu Tammam, Al Jahiz and Book of Misers, Al Mutanabbi. 11. Abbas period of the literatury synthesis and prosaic creation (Shia Buyids in the role of patrons, Abu Al Faraj AL Esfahani, maqams of Al Hamadhani and Al Hariri with examples, history and geography- Al Mas´udi, narrative and memoir prose - Usáma ibn Munkiz s ukázkami). 12. Andalusia and North Africa as centres of Islamic philosophy (Ibn Bagga, Ibn Rushd, Ibn Tufail: Alive, son of Awake). 13. Epoch of later Middle Ages and selected works in domestic translation (Ibn Khallikan, Ibn Battuta, Ibn Chaldun). 14. Pre-Exam Credit
