Course content
1. Introduction. Theoretical introduction and basic terms (churches, sects, sectors, subcultures, chilonim, datim, charedim,...). Socio-demographic characteristic of contemporary Israel. 2. " Jewish and democratic." Penetration of the religion and policy in the political systems and every day life of Israeli. Halacha, status quo and the case of the constitution. Role of the supreme rabbinate. Legislation decisive for the status of minorities in the Jewish state. 3. 50s and Ashkenazi socialist secular ethos "mamlachtijut." Important representatives, influence in the policy, culture and architecture. Israeli communism, socialism, labourism. 4. "Mizrachim" - Oriental Sephardic Jews and their role in "Orientalizations" and "Americanization" of Israel. 5. "Charedim" - diversity of the seemingly uniform world. Social standards, dynastic structure and specifics of the everyday life of the orthodox society. 6. Israeli Arabs (or Israeli Palestinians?). The complexity of Arab identities (Palestinians versus Israeli Arabs versus Bedouins). The social transformation of Arab minority in Israel (processes of "Israelation", "Palestinization", "Islamization", "localization"). Specifics of Arab life in Israel. Opportunities and everyday troubles. Hebraization of Arabic ("arabivrit"). 7. Christian churches in Israel. Relations between state and each other. Status of the Christians in Israel. Armenian community in Jerusalem. Phenomenon of the Messianic Jews. 8. Ethiopian Jews - operation Moses. Operation Solomon. Transformation of the definition of the Judaism of Ethiopians. Socio-demographic specifics of the Ethiopian community. Negative social phenomena. Racism of the Israeli society? 9. Druses - community separated by borders. A brief overview of the history of Druses. Israeli and Golan Druses. Geography, demography, community situation and relation with the state. 10. Russian-Jewish immigrants. Refusnics. Collapse of the Soviet Union. Socio-demographic characteristics. Role of the Russian-Jewish immigrant on Israeli innovative culture and High- Tech Industry. 11. French and American Jews. Relationship between Israel and the two biggest Diaspora community. American-Jewish liberal criticism versus negation of the Diaspora (šlilat ha-gola). French Aliyah of the 21st century and its consequences. 12. Movie screening. 13. Pre-term of the final exam.
