Course content
1. Religion as a topic in historical sciences 2. Religion in Assyriology 3. History of thinking about religion and faith 4. Sociology of religion 1 5. Sociology of religion 2 6. Development of religious thinking in the Middle East 7. Religion in perspective of anthropology 8. Cosmogony, cosmology, Theogony, anthropogeny 9. A sacred place, time and its symbolism, cultic calendars 10. Ritual, the theory of rite of passage rituals 11. Demons, monsters and magic, religious symbols 12. Body and clothing, ritual purity, gender and sexuality 13. Dietary rules

Learning activities and teaching methods
  • Presentation preparation (report) (1-10) - 8 hours per semester

Knowledge
- to describe modern history of the Middle East - to explain perspectives of social sciences and humanities and their potential - to explain basic phenomena or elements of the three most important monotheisms - to identify basic academic works on religion in the Middle East and North Africa

- to know and individually use key terms that social sciences work with especially in the context of religion - to work individually with academic literature - to gather information from current information sources and to critically interpret them - to use effectively modern information technology - to identify available academic literature and to evaluate and use it - to use actively English
