Course content
1. Natural conditions, ethnic and linguistic structure 2. Prehistoric period in the Middle East, domestications of plants and animals, the emergence of agriculture and pastoral farming 3. Hassuna, Halaf, Samarra, Ubaid culture, the rise of urban civilization and writing in the South Mesopotamia during the Uruk period culture 4. Early Dynastic period, the emergence of territorial states (Akkadian state) 5. the Middle-Babylonian period in South Mesopotamia, the Middle-Assyrian period in North Mesopotamia 6. Neo-Hittites period, other state formations in the territory of Anatolia during 2nd millennium BC 7. Syro-Palestine during 2nd millennium BC; diplomatic contacts in the light of the Amarna letters 8. Iran during 2nd millennium BC.; Elam and other state formations 9. Neo-Assyrian period in North Mesopotamia 10. Period of Assyrian domination in South Mesopotamia; Neo-Babylonian period 11. Anatolia during 1st millennium BC; Phrygia, Lydia, Syro-Palestine during 1st millennium BC; Israel, Judah 12. Media; Middle East under the rule of Persian empire, Hellenistic period in the Middle East, empire of Seleucid and Ptolemaic 13. Rome in the Middle East; Parthian empire, Sasanian empire

- to compile timeline of history of ancient Middle East - to describe the impact of the Neolithic Revolution, the use of ceramics, the discovery of writing and the emergence of territorial states on the life of the inhabitants in the region - to explain historical development of Middle East from the oldest evidences till Sasanian period - to date and characterize all of the important geographical units in Mesopotamia, Syro-Palestine, Anatolia and Iran - to identify the most important events, places and persons in the given part of history - to characterize given religious traditions

- to differentiate cultures and development phases by the specific features - to characterize and interpret importance and culture legacy of each period - to work individually with the relevant academic literature
