Course content
|
1) Introduction. The point of departure - late 16th and early 17th century. Montaigne, Bacon, Galilei. 2) René Descartes (1596-1650). 3) Further figures and movements of Descartes' period: Mersenne, Gassendi, Hobbes, Arnauld, Pascal, Malebranche, the occasionalists. 4) The big systems: Spinoza, Leibniz. 5) Locke, Newton, Berkeley, Shaftesbury, Butler, Hutcheson. 6) The Enlightenment: Bayle, Voltaire, Montesquieu, Diderot, d'Alembert atd. Rousseau. 7) David Hume (1711-1776). 8) Immanuel Kant (1724-1804). 9) The idealists: Fichte, Schelling, Hegel. Further German philosophy of the epoch. 10) Opposition to idealism: Schopenhauer, Feuerbach, Trendelenburg, Kierkegaard, Marx, Nietzsche. 11) Utilitarianism and positivism: Bentham, Comte, Mill, Spencer. 12) Other figures of the 19th century: Cousin, Tocqueville, Darwin, Nietzsche, Sidgwick atd. 13) Prelude to the 20th century: neokantianism, Brentano school, pragmatism, Bergson.
