Course content
Introduction to the discipline. Theory of beauty and art in Greek and Roman thinking. Early Christian aesthetics, proportion and light in theories of Middle Ages. Renaissance: Ficino about beauty, humanists and art theory; 17th century: baroque, French classics; the beau arts. Enlightenment thinkers about beauty, taste, nature, aesthetics and art criticism. Kant, Hegel. Positivism and the aesthetics in the 19th century, Czech situation. Influential concepts of 20th century, contemporary aesthetics. Beginnings of any art theory; Vitruv and his influence; the ideal of classic art and the idea of historical developement of art (Vasari, Winckelmann, Hegel...); artist as genius; scientific approach to history of art in the 19th century (Wölfflin, the Vienna School); theories of modern art (avant-garde); art and politics; visual culture and its discurses.
