Course content
1)-2) Early humanism and the revival of Antiquity. Ancient works of art and epighaphy between the end of Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Petrarch, tradition of mirabilia, and Roma instaurata of Flavio Biondo 3)-4) Ancient authors as a source of information on the art of Antiquity. Pliny the Elder. Plinian models (the use of artists´ signature, competition of arts). Dissemination of ancient models in contemporary Renaissance art. 5)-6) The personality of the artis (Giottian legend, artistic biography, autobiography, and their usability as a source of information - Vasari, Condivi, Cellini) 7)-8) Renaissance treatises. Artistic manuals, their ancient and mediaeval roots. Their importance for knowledge of the material nature and techniques of the work of art (Cennino Cennini). 9)-10) Renaissance Paragone (Competition of Arts): from an early reflection of Plinian tradition and competition with Antiquity to Benedetto Varchi. 11)-12) Theory of art genres: portrait, grottesque. Artistic forgery 13) The influence of Italian art theory in Transalpine Europe: artistic biography (Karl Van Mander, Joachim von Sandrart)

to describe and interpret the work of art (especially so-called old European art) on the basis of its contemporary interpretation, and clarify the differences of its interpretation from the current state of art-historical and cultural-historical knowledge
to enumerate the main personalities of painters and sculptors (including their work) and characterise the main subjects of Renaissance art theory
Skills
to evaluate individual works of early modern art from the viewpoint of the period intellectual context of discussion of art, to identify, formulate and explain the main ideas of Renaissance art theory that could influence them
