Course content
Translation as a process. Intralingual and interlingual translation. Basic translational procedures. Use of dictionaries and other language handbooks. Characterization of main functional styles. Analysis of a translated text. Equivalence at the lexical, grammatical and textual level. Trnaslation of texts from the field of commerce, popular science and administration.

  • Preparation for formative assessments (2-20) - 20 hours per semester
  • Undergraduate study programme term essay (20-40) - 32 hours per semester
  • Contact hours - 26 hours per semester

Knowledge
to use English at level B2 according to the CEFR
to have a command of the Czech language at secondary school graduation level;
to have a knowledge of the basic morphological and syntactic categories of the English language;
to have a knowledge of functional styles and their characteristics;
to express oneself clearly on the issue in writing and orally.
Skills
to apply specialized knowledge at B2 level according to CEFR
to identify basic morphological and syntactic phenomena in an English text;
to identify basic functional styles;
to demonstrate understanding of English texts
to summarise the content of an English text and identify its main ideas;
to translate selected passages of English texts into Czech.

to demonstrate the knowledge of equivalence at the grammatical, lexical and textual level.
Skills
to demonstrate a broadening and deepening of the level of language skills attained, i.e. B2+ according to the CEFR, on various types of tasks;
adequately apply knowledge of translation procedures;
perform a basic analysis of the source text, i.e. the text to be translated;
to work with bilingual and monolongual dictionaries
translate the source text from the business, economic and legal fields into the target language without shifting the meaning;
to independently prepare a seminar paper according to the given criteria.
