Course content

1. Kinship, affinity, reproduction. Biological reproduction, notions of conception, shared substance and definitions of kinship. 2. Enculturation and life stages. Cultural variability in understanding life stages and approaches to them. Transition rituals. Age classes. 3. Marriage in an intercultural perspective. Choosing a spouse. Culturally specific forms of marriage (monogamy, polygyny, polyandry). 4. Family and household. Family and household: reproduction and production? Typology of postmarital residence, typology family households. 5. Kinship and social organization. Patrilinear and matrilinear systems.Types of descending groups. Genera, clans, moieties. 6. Sexuality and incest taboo. Rules governing sexual relations. Banning incest as a cultural universal? Cultural variability incest taboo. 7. Gender and gender. Masculinity and femininity. Gender dichotomy. Biological differences vs. social construction of gender (and gender?). 8. Social status and gender roles. Division of labor and status hierarchy in relation to gender. Gender socialization. Gender stereotypes. 9. Gender and sexuality in an intercultural perspective. Physicality and sexuality. Sexual identities and sexual behavior and their cultural variability. 10.
