- Introduction of the course. EE as a research concept. - Defining of the discipline. The definition of ethnology from the point of view of particular national traditions. - European Ethnology - the study of intersubjective behaviour of individuals and collectivities from the social-cultural perspective. - Forerunners of EE in the Middle European area. The history of ethnological research of Europe. Europe as a research "field". - "Volkskunde" and "Völkerkunde" in the tradition of Middle European ethnography. - Austrian ethnographers and their interest in "the other". - Heading towards EE in Scandinavia. - Two kinds of tradition in Czech countries. - Methodological background of EE. - Innovative approach to the traditional themes and formulating of the new ones. - EE and intercultural communication. - Institutional summary of departments engaged in EE, important periodicals, current situation in particular countries.
