Course content
|
1. Introduction to anthropological study of language. 2. Origin and development of language, historical overview of early conceptions of language from antiquity to modern times. General grammar; Port-Royal Grammar; representation theory. 3. Comparative linguistics; philology and oriental studies; Maldogrammaticians and Copenhagen School. 4. Basics of modern linguistics and semiology: CH. S. Pierce and F. De Saussure; concept and properties of character and meaning. System concept of language. The emergence of structural linguistics; diachrony and synchrony, character components, character properties, syntagma and paradigm. 5. Structural linguistics F. De Saussura, Russian formalism, Prague Linguistic Circle; phonetics and phonology. 6. Structural anthropology and linguistics; Claude Lévi-Strauss. 7. Franz Boas, American linguistic anthropology and the theory of linguistic relativism; Sapir-Whorf hypothesis. 8. Linguistic anthropology sociolinguistics; generative and transformational linguistics. 9. Discourse theory; discursive regularities and discursive practices. 10. Gramatology and deconstruction; Use of the deconstruction method in anthropology. 11. Analytical approaches to language. Theory of speech acts and cognitive linguistics. 12. Linguistic models in anthropology, dialogic paradigm and other concepts of literary theory used in the social sciences. 13. End of semester; final exam.
