Course content
1. Sociological theories of ageing. 2.-3.Population ageing, its causes and effects. The influence of demographic trends on the attitudes toward ageing. 3. Ageing as social construct. 5.-6. Work and retirement. 7.Health and health care in old age. Long term care for elderly. 8. Social representations of ageing. Ageism and age norms. 9. Gender and ageing. The varieties of aging experience. 10. Social inequalities in old age. 11.-12. Family patterns, intergenerational relationships and solidarity. 13. Life-styles in old age. Free time and leisure activities.

Knowledge
Good knowlidge of english. The course is primarily destined for MA. students of sociology. It presuposse knowledge of sociological terminology and methodology at least within the range of admission exam.

learning outcomes
Knowledge
Students are able to identify and analyze current demographical trends. They identify their mutual relation and discuss tehir impact on society. They are able to summarize the causes and consequences of the demographical ageing at the micro and macro level and compare the demographical trends in various countries in the context of their specific sociohistorical context. The reading for the course make students acquainted with the key texts dealing with the issues of ageing. On their basis students are able to identify various approaches to the issues of ageing, compare them and discuss their contributions and limits. By means of the discussion of these text students practice their ability to analyze various approaches according to their methodological and theorethical approaches. Students are able to identify key ideas in the texts and reflect them critically.
