Course content
|
1. Causality in social sciences and methods of its determination. Comparison of different research designs. 2. Model of elaboration and explanation of social phenomena - correlation and association, causality. The problem of false relationships, common causes, intermediate variables. 3.-4. Experiments in social sciences, possibilities and limits of their use. Examples of classical studies. Vignettes and experiments in questionnaire surveys. Great social experiments. Ethical issues in experiments. 5. Natural experiments and quasi-experiments, comparison, advantages and disadvantages. Examples. 6. Social change - basic ways of its sociological explanation. Cohort analysis. Problems in the study of cohorts, the problem of linear dependence between age, historical period and cohort. 7.-8. Longitudinal designs and their comparison, advantages and disadvantages, applicability in the study of causal relationships. 9.-10. Comparative sociological research. Basic strategies (comparison with small and large number of cases compared) and their comparison. Examples. 11.-12. Statistical and material significance. 13. Writing and presenting research projects.
