Course content
|
Learning a language requires not only the mastery of linguistic means, but also the ability to repeatedly move between cultures. Each week in the seminar we will analyze particular examples of translation, both from English to Czech and vice versa. Students will examine not only texts at the level of style, diction and form (including those genres dealt with in the seminar Academic and Creative Writing), but also examine in detail expressions, links and terms that are from the translation point of view almost untranslatable. We will look at not only translations of a high professional standard, but also "quick and dirty" translations (for instance for TV serials). In approaching such material, students will concentrate on both the practical and theoretical linguistic challenges which these types of translation involve. Students will use the knowledge and skills acquired in the preceding seminars, and discover further ways that culture influences the practical aspects of translation. The material for this seminar will include screenplays, recipes, poems, short stories, memoirs and news articls.
