Course content
|
1. Introduction to German history: basic ideas; Germans appear in history; Germanic tribes, their all day´s life; fighting against the Romans; Germanic mythology; Germanic tribes in the historical consciousness and general public. 2. "Nibelungenlied"- a song and its importance for the German historical consciousness within different historical periods. 3. Other myths; selected from Early and High Middle Ages (Charlemagne, in his relation to the German countries; the myth of the "sleeping Emperor"; the knight with his lion, or where did the Czech "Bruncvík" derive from? Historical figures transforming to their myth. Origins and administration of the Holy Roman Empire. 4. German lands in the High Middle Ages, selected issues. Structures of medieval society. German medieval cities (the Pied Piper legend; tale of the "German Horymír", the most famous German pirate; selected urban tales. Minne-song. 5. Famous myth from the late medieval and early modern period. Selected stories from Bavarian history, such as: Agnes Bernauer; Wedding at Landshut; Götz von Berlichingen "The iron-hand man". Did Baron Prášil (Münchhausen) really live? 6. German territories during Renaissance and Reformation. The Fugger and Welser families. German ecclesiastical reformers. Renaissance civilization. 7. The Thirty Years War in German territories; important personages; battles in Germany; traditions deriving from Waldstein (Altdorf, Schiller and his Wallenstein). Reception of the Thirty Years' War in festival plays (Rottenburg, Dinkelsbühl, Nördlingen). Less-known personages of the German early modern times (Baron Trenck; Wars against Maria Theresa of Austria; Augustus the Strong and Dresden; Saxony's wealth and bankruptcy. German baroque art). 8. Besides Prussia: neglected 19th century´s history/ 1st part: Bavarian history: Earl Montgelas as "Bavarian Joseph II."; Creation of the Kingdom of Bavaria; King Ludwig I. as politician and builder. 9. Besides Prussia: neglected 19th century´s history/ 2nd part: the Bavarian Kingdom until 1918; major Bavarian kings; "Fairy tale King" Ludwig II., myth and facts. 10. Breakdown of the German Empire. Republic of Weimar and the reception of the Czech people in the Bavarian confines during this period ("Bavarian Siberia", wartime propaganda). 11. Period of National Socialism in the German historical remembrance, referring to historical textbooks. Dispute among the Historians: Objects from the "Third Reichs" period as historical reminders? Germany after the Second World War; creation of two German states; internal developments; reception of West Germany in Czechoslovakia. 12. Political, economic and cultural development of the former GDR/ East Germany: rebellion of 1953; construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961; internal resistance till 1989. 13. Final summary.

At least knowledge of essential aspects concerning German history; proficiency in German language is favourable but not precondition. Focus is not only turned on factual knowledge, but on the "second life" of events and personages, which means their reception in the historical consciousness. |

Student (s): Can work out cornerstones of German history. Can analyze, discuss and assess selected events of German history and their reception in the historical consciousness. Can take a position to different opinions and points of view to them can incorporate activities and personages into the wider context of Czech-German relationship and general European history. Can get orientation in the basic concepts associated with German history and include them in the studies. Can deal with historical sources as well as literature on selected issues of German history, and apply them in practice. |
