Course content
Lecture syllabus: 1. Introduction to the study, definition of the term health psychology, application of psychology in healthcare. 2. Psychological issues of the patient and illness - attitude towards illness, changes in experience and behavior during illness. 3. Psychology of outpatient and hospitalized patients. 4. Psychological issues of illness - autoplastic image of illness, ambivalent experience of illness. Illness as a difficult life situation. 5. Adaptation to hospitalization, hospitalism, separation anxiety. 6. Issues of patient fear and anxiety. 7. Pain and its management by the patient. 8. Aggression in healthcare practice. CAN, domestic violence. 9. Chronically ill patient. 10. Psychological approach to a handicapped patient. 11. Psychology of rehabilitation. 12. Personality of a healthcare professional (basic prerequisites for successful activity). 13. Healthcare professional and patient - relationship between healthcare professional and patient, family and healthcare professionals, empathy, altruism, devaluation, evaluation, iatropathogenesis. Exercise syllabus: Continues on the content of the discussed theory of lectures: - comparison of the psychological situation of a healthy and sick person, - model situations - attitude towards illness, - subjective experience of pain, psychological means to reduce pain, fear and anxiety, - communication skills in healthcare - verbal and non-verbal communication in healthcare practice, conversation with a patient of different ages (senior, child), relatives, - psychological approach to handicapped patients.

The student explains the attitudes of the patient to the illness, characterizes the psychological problems of the illness, describes the issue of adaptation to hospitalization and preventive approach of the health care professional, characterizes the problems of pain, fear and anxiety in the ill. the role of a health care professional and the specifics of communication skills in medical practice.

The student analyzes the attitudes of the patient to the disease, applies a specific approach and communication skills in patients with anxiety and fear, characterizes the disease as a difficult life situation, applies a suitable approach and reduces acute and chronic pain in the patient, practically applies a suitable approach and knows the specifics of health care professional and sick.
