Course content

Basic concepts and terms of Czech studies, linguistic disciplines and border disciplines. Position of Czech among Indo-European languages and typical features of Czech as a Slavonic language. Development of Czech in outline. Characteristics of Czech from phonetic, morphological, syntactic, lexical and semantic points of view. Stratification and differentiation of the national language. Standard level of the language, norm and codification. Dialects and colloquial language. Professional speech, slang and argot. Functional styles of Czech. Written form of the language, orthography and writing. Spoken form of the language and pronunciation. The latest developments in Czech language standards. Czech in dictionaries. Czech linguists.
