Course content
1. Introduction to classical literature on the subject of Roman criminal law and the personalities of some important authors: Theodor Mommsen, Contardo Ferrini, Cesare Beccaria 2. Development of Roman criminal law in the royal period, in the period of the Roman Republic, in the period of the Principate and Dominate 3. Groups and types of Roman crimes 4. Typology of Roman criminal trials: commissary trial, trial before juries 5. Specific cases of application of Roman law: trial of Jesus Christ, trials of Christian martyrs 6. Criminal law in the Middle Ages in the writings of glossators and commentators (Albertus Gandinus, Angelus Arentinus, Guilelmus Durantis, Bartolus of Saxoferrata) 7. Punishments of canon law in the patristic period and in the Middle Ages 8. Typology of crimes and punishments according to the doctrine of canon law: apostates, heretics, schismatics 9. The Roman Inquisition, its structure and action 10.Some specific criminal cases: Jan Hus, Savonarola, Giordano Bruno 11.The practice of the Roman Inquisition in the 19th century on the example of the scandal in the Roman monastery of Sant'Ambrogio 12.Modern Vatican court scandals: The Vatican bank IOR and Archbishop Marcinkus, the Vatileaks 1, Vatileaks 2 scandals, the trial of Cardinal Becciu
