Course content
Thematic areas: Basic greetings and phrases. Formal vs. informal style. Czech alphabet and basic rules of Czech pronunciation. Numbers 1-100,000 Food and drink, restaurants. My family. Time and date expression. Everyday and leisure activities. Countries, nationalities and languages. House and apartment. Human body, human appearance, communication with a doctor. Shopping. Vacation, travel. Cleaning and housework. Rules of polite behavior. Characteristics of a person. Weather. Technology and communication. Fashion and clothing. Trade, business and services. Life period. Interpersonal relationships. Animals. Work and job search. Job interview, workplace communication. Art and culture. Visit to the theater/cinema and other cultural events. Czech Republic - geography, nature, Czech UNESCO monuments, figures of Czech history. Standard and colloquial Czech, Czech dialects.

Learning activities and teaching methods
  • Contact hours - 400 hours per semester
  • Preparation for an examination (30-60) - 25 hours per semester
  • Preparation for formative assessments (2-20) - 75 hours per semester

- knowledge of the Latin alphabet

- master at least one of the world's languages (English, German, Spanish, French or Russian) at the A2 level

Knowledge
- distinguish between formal and informal communication (tykání and vykání) - distinguish masculine, feminine and neuter gender of nouns and adjectives - distinguish individual declension forms in the singular and plural - distinguish the forms of soft and hard adjectives - list numbers 1-100,000 - distinguish verb forms in the present, past and future tenses - to name people, animals, things and phenomena with which they come into contact on a daily basis
Skills
- use a formal or informal way of communication appropriate to the situation - correctly addressing, greeting and thanking - pronounce correctly and read clearly out loud - answer questions about themselves or a close person - find, summarize or analyze basic information in a short text or listening from the field of everyday life - write short texts about themrselves, messages and e-mails - use the correct declension forms and all verb tenses in their speech
