Course content
Week 1 Introduction to the study of Portuguese, Portuguese in the world Portuguese vowels and consonants; alphabet, verbs ser, estar + chamar-se, basic phrases. Week 2 Nasals, diphthongs and triphthongs. Vowel signs. Definite article. Personal pronouns; national adjectives, country names, introducing yourself, basic greetings. Week 3 Negatives of verbs. Question formation. Verb ter. Prepositions (de, em). Foreign languages. Occupations. Numerals 0-10 Week 4 Verb haver, ser, estar (differences). Prepositions of place. Furniture. Orientation in the room. Adjectives denoting characteristics. Week 5 Interrogative pronouns. Indefinite article. Numerals 20 - 100. Regular verbs ending in -ar. Furnishings of rooms, flats, and houses. Week 6 Regular verbs ending in -ar, -er, -ir. Verb Ir. Reflexive verbs. Food and eating. Daily routine. Week 7 Phrase estar + a + inf. Numerals 100 - 1000. Prepositions of time. Days of the week, vocabulary: restaurant, café, confectionery, stationery. Week 8 Mid-term test Week 9 Irregular verbs querer, saber, poder. Periphrastic future tense. Invitations, accepting/rejecting invitations. Prepositions and their contraction with the definite article. Week 10 Irregular verbs ver, vir, ler. Há/desde - time determinations. Personal pronouns and indirect object. Letter: writing the date, salutation, and closing phrases. Telephoning. Week 11 Irregular verbs fazer, dizer, trazer. Possessive pronouns. Months, seasons. Grading of adjectives, comparisons. Planning a holiday. Weather. Week 12 Revision of the material covered. Week 13 Final test
