Course content
This subject deals with the way that Czech culture is reflected in anglophone media and literature. How do Americans, British and other foreigners perceive Czech culture? What kind of questions do they ask and what answers do they find? How do these differ from those of Czechs? This is not primarily an analysis of Czechness, but rather the aim is to teach students to see their own culture from the outside, here through anglophone approaches. Students will deal with three main areas - literature, film and politics - learning not only intercultural competence but also recognizing how these are dealt with in the anglophone world. In film, the course will deal with different types of reviews of Czech films, learning to see what anglophone viewers see in these; we will also consider the language and style of such reviews, as well as the other texts.
