Course content
|
1. The position of syntax in the grammatical system of English; the basic syntactic terminology (sentence, clause, phrase, constituent of a clause, word); 2. Individual sentence types by the word order and by the communicative function 3. The structure of a simple sentence: obligatory clause elements (clause patterns), optional clause elements; 4. Characteristics of individual clause elements, means of realization, semantic roles: subject, verb, obligatory subject and object complements, adverbial, modifier, optional subject and object complements; 5. Negation in English: means of negation; clausal, local negation; multiple negation; negative concord; 6. Sentence consisiting of two or more clauses: paratactic and hypotactic relations; coordinators, subordinators; 7. Compound sentence: coordinators, semantic relations between the main clauses, 8. Complex sentence: main clause, matrix clause, subordinate clause; types of dependent clauses; 9. Dependent adverbial clauses: semantic categories, subordinating conjunctions; 10. Dependent adjectival clauses: restrictive, non-restrictive; 11. Dependent nominal clauses: content, relative
