Typical features of individual periods will be outlined in the following areas: vocabulary, grammar, syntax (as well as literature).Intentional emphasy on the combination of the two viewpoints (linguistic and social) makes it possible for the students to discover and understand the inevitable tendencies in the development of the language: 1. Genealogical and typological characteristics of English 2. linguistic situation on the British Isles before English 3. Old English: - External history - Internal history - OE dialects - Foreign influences upon English in the OE period 4. Middle English: - external history; - Rise of Standard English - Internal history - Foreign influences upon English in the ME period 5. Modern English - Early Modern English: external history - the position of the languge in the 17th and 18th centuries; - Early Modern English: internal history (focus on the phonological system) - Present-Day English external history (focus on the position of English in the international communication) - Present-Day English internal history (new tendencies to be traced in the language)
