Course content
|
The course provides a general introduction to the study of language and individual branches of linguistics, acquainting students with terminology of morphology, syntax, lexicology, stylistics, sociolinguistics and discourse analysis. This is followed by a historical survey of the development of languages in the British Isles and regional varieties of English. The final section of the course looks more closely at sociolinguistics and such questions as communicative competence, the ethnographic approach to research in linguistics, bilingualism and gender differences in communication.
