Course content
Basic topics: 1.- 2. Introductory lecture - definition and characteristics of 11 - 13th century (approaches and sources) 3. - 4. Structures of the Přemyslid state and their organization - the castle system, the form of early medieval castle centres 5. Service organization and princely estate 6. - 7. Changes of the structure of medieval settlement (colonization, settlement procedure dynamics, transformation of early medieval settlements and the development of late medieval villages) 8. Origins of the landed aristocracy and the form of its oldest dwellings (courts, castles) 9. - 10. The origins and development of church administration, sacral buildings, the oldest monasteries and the development of the monastery estate 11. The changes of burial rite in the 11 - 13th century 12 - 13. The development of cities in the 13th century and the beginnings of urbanization (transformation of early medieval centres in early towns, foundation of location towns, failed locations) 14. Mining and processing of iron and precious metals 15. Technical innovations in agriculture 16. Early medieval (Young Iron Age/Late Iron Age) and High Medieval pottery 17. Artefacts evidencing long-distance trade, exchange and socio-cultural contacts
