Lectures 1. Periodic table. Periodicity of properties of elements and their compounds. The structure of crystalline substances. Stereochemistry of inorganic compounds. 2. Hydrogen, hydrides. Oxygen, oxides. Water. Elemental nonmetals. Halogens. Chalcogens. Noble gases. 3. Chemistry of non-transitional elements and their compounds. Elemental metals. Non-transition metals (s-elements, p-elements). 4. Chemistry of transition elements and their compounds. Coordination compounds. 5. Use and importance of important elements and their compounds in practice. Biogenic elements. The most important inorganic components of tissues. Ions of the internal environment. Active and passive transport of ions. Biological importance of sodium, potassium, calcium and iron. 6. Basic principles of organic chemistry. 7. Alkanes and cycloalkanes, alkenes, alkynes. Arenas. Halogen derivatives of hydrocarbons. 8. Alcohols, phenols and quinones. Aldehydes and ketones. Carboxylic acids. 9. Amino acids, structure of peptides. Organic substances containing sulfur or nitrogen. 10. The most important heterocyclic compounds. Pyrrole and tetrapyrrole derivatives, heme and bile dyes. Derivatives of indole, thiazole, pyridine, imidazole, pyrimidine, purine, isoalloxazine, pteridine. 11. Chemistry of carbohydrates. Monosaccharides, disaccharides, polysaccharides. Heteropolysaccharides and their components. 12. Chemistry of lipids. Higher fatty acids. Fats. Steroid substances. Cholesterol and bile acids. Steroid hormones. Terpenes. 13. Structure of nucleic acids. Pyrimidine and purine bases. Polynucleotides. 14. Basic structure of RNA and DNA. 15. Repetition of selected parts of the subject matter. Practicals 1. - 2. Solutions.
