1. Legislation in nuclear energy and ionising radiation, nuclear facilities and materials, legislative processes, structure, and content of the Czech Atomic Act. 2. Nuclear safety supervisory authorities in the Czech Republic, international nuclear safety authorities, international legislation, conventions, and organisations. 3. Nuclear safety - goals, basic principles and criteria, defence in depth. 4. Safety systems of current nuclear facilities and power plants, safety features for reactivity control and protection against ionisation radiation. 5. Protection of nuclear facilities and materials - physical protection, prevention and emergency response, historical and present experience. 6. Emergency preparedness and crisis management - emergency response planning, radiation incident and radiation accident, and population protection. 7. Nuclear weapons - history of development, current situation, Treaty of the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. 8. Radioactive materials and waste - production, categorisation, processing, handling, transport, and security. 9. Spent nuclear fuel - handling and processing, interim storage, reprocessing facility, final disposal. 10. Principles of radiation protection - types, sources, and effects of ionising radiation on living organisms, essential physical variables. 11. Impact of nuclear facilities on the environment and its monitoring (a hydrological situation, threat of radionuclide leakage,...), radiation monitoring network. 12. Detection of ionising radiation and dosimetry - radioactivity, essential dosimetric variables, types and use of IZ detectors. 13. Nuclear safety (lecture delivered by SÚJB) The course includes an excursion to SÚRO Prague.
