Course content
|
Cross-section of topics: basic concepts associated with argumentation: argumentation in terms of sources of inspiration - dialectics, rhetoric, logic; the concept of critical thinking and cognitive bias. The emergence of a separate discipline - Stephen Toulmin, Toulmin's scheme of argument. The new rhetoric - Chaim Perelman, Lucie Olbrechts-Tyteca. Other currents in argumentation theory - informal logic, social science perspectives, language-oriented approaches to argumentation, Jürgen Habermas's theory, pragma-dialectical approach to argumentation, perspectives on argumentation today. "Proper argumentation" - how to argue properly? Tutorials, procedures. Types of arguments according to Weston. Errors in argumentation - detecting errors in argumentation. Concepts associated with incorrect argumentation - manipulation, misinformation, fake news, hoax, propaganda, conspiracy theories, media literacy. Informal logic: logic and language - turn to language, logical analysis, formalisation, reglementation of statements, logical form of sentences; meaning - semantics, formal semantics, concepts associated with meaning. Informal logic: deficiencies of language; critical thinking:ognitive bias.: basic concepts/pillars of critical thinking; classification and categorization; problem solving; logical fallacies; conditions, applications and methods of critical thinking - critical writing, critical reading, mind maps.
