Preromantismus (Madame de Staël, Chateaubriand), German and English influence on the shaping of French Romanticism Theatre of Romanticism (Pixérécourt and popular melodrama, Hugo, Vigny, Musset) Poetry first generation Romantics (Lamartine, Vigny, Hugo, Musset) Romantic Novel Production (historical, personal, social novel) The second generation of Romantics (Nerval, Aloysus Bertrand) and Parnassus French positivism and the so-called ?critical realism? Naturalism of Zola (theoretical work aligned to the poetics of novels) Fiction (Maupassant, Gautier, German and American influences) Symbolism and Decadence: French poetry at the turn of the century The crisis of the French novel at the turn of the century Genres in the 19th century
