Course content
1. 1.Contacts of medieval Europe with Overseas- culture, economy 2. The beginnings of the Portuguese expansion into Africa and India 3. Spanish voyages of discovery, Columbus' voyages 4. Rise of the Spanish colonial empire in Latin America 5. The conquest and decimation of indigenous empires: the Aztecs, Mayas and Incas 6. History of the Native American population, American Indians (characteristics, lifestyle ...) 7. Consequences of the Discoveries in the field of economic and cultural 8. The first trip around the world: Magellan and Drake 9. The second phase of overseas expansion, the advent of Dutch, British and French 10. The most significant personalities of Discoveries and expansion in the 16th -17th century 11. Discoveries in modern history, the Arctic expedition cruises and 12. Picture of Discoveries in historiography 13. Creating of Euro-American civilization space and lasting consequences of Discoveries for the modern world.

Desirable, but not significantly prerequisite is completion of courses as Ancient History and Medieval History.
learning outcomes
Students can clarify the European geographical discoveries in the Classic time and later period (to 1520, to 20 century). They are able to explain the role of major personalities of explored areas. They demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the history and cultural contribution of indigenous empires in America. They prove an understanding of political and economic context of the overseas discoveries with the development of Europe and the world (e.g. the division of the world, colonial expansion, colonial trade, mercantilism and colonization from 17th to 18th century, the colonial rivalry of European powers to the 20th century.
