Course content
1. The prehistory of the welfare state 2. The precursors of the welfare state - Bismarck's Germany, the liberal era in Great Britain 3. The Beveridge Report and the emergence of the NHS in the UK 4. The post-war era and the emergence of comprehensive systems - basic typologies 5. Richard Titmuss - social policy as a discipline 6. Critique of the welfare state 7. Social policy in the USA 8. Scandinavian practice 9. German social policy 10. Social policy and the neoliberalism of Thatcher and Reagan 11. "Non-traditional" social systems 12. Social policy in Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic 13. Contemporary challenges of the welfare state
