Course content
Construction of the Spanish and Portuguese empires in the New World and the Indian Ocean. - The emergence of large trading companies of the early modern period. - Analysis of the causes of Dutch hegemony in the 17th century. - The rivalry of Great Britain and France in overseas possessions. Colonization of North America, India and South Africa. - The raise of the British Empire. - Colonization of Africa in the second half of the 19th century. - The collapse of the Ottoman Empire at the end of the Second World War. - The fate of the overseas possessions after the Second World War. - The continuing economic and cultural ties of the independent states to the former colonial metropolis. - The collapse of the Soviet Union in the context of the ongoing process of decolonization.
