Course content
|
1) The structure of urban and rural society during the pre-March period (the first half of 19th century): settled and unsettled rural population, burgessses, suburban inhabitans, houseless lodgers, marginal social classes (Jews, extramarital relations, Gypsies, etc.). 2) Corvee and serfdom as factors retarding the development of rural society: the relationship between serfs and landlords in the light of the feudal income tax and its changes by the Enlightenment reforms, feudal estate, anti-feudal protest of serfs 3) The town and the countryside as the war background: everyday life during the Napoleonic wars, tax burden (financial and cereal), the presence of troops in a village and its reflection in rural and urban chronicles, military career as an opportunity for social advancement 4) The birth of modern bureaucracy: the municipal and aristocratic bureaucracy in the pre-March period: the formation of regulated magistrates and seignorial officials (so-called justiciáři), their social origin 5) Elementary and secondary schools in the long 19th century: the educational system in the first half of the 19th century, the school reform in 1869, teacher population and the role of the teacher in the society 6) The security forces and their place in urban and rural communities: protective folders before 1848, municipal and state police, financial guard, a gendarmerie (their background, activities, responsibilities) 7) Local government: the circumstances, legislation, development and importance of municipal and district governments 8) State administration and its representation: district marshal (okresní hejtman), phenomenon of officer in the 19th century, the everyday bureaucrat in countryside 9) The Church in the life of urban and rural society in the 19th century: the lower clergy in the city and countryside 10) Development of traffic and communications in the 19th century: building a rail and road network in the Czech lands 11) Demographic aspects of the Czech population: a new demographic regime, population growth and its impact on the appearance of towns and villages, migration within the Habsburg Monarchy, health conditions, emigration to the US 12) Cultural activities of urban and rural human: exhibitions, museums, journalism, life in guilds as a sociocultural phenomenon of the 19th century 13) Industrialization as an economic and social element: protoindustrialization, proletarisation of the urban and rural population, the working conditions of workers etc.
