Course content
|
1. Definitions, periodization (Early Modern Period, "long" 19th century, etc.), editions of sources, review of scientific literature and journals with the theme of modern history, a major research centres. 2. Estates and absolutism, internal political development of the Danubian monarchy, aristocracy in the Czech lands in the 16th to 18th century (political aspirations, lifestyle, specific hierarchy of values). 3. Danubian monarchy as a geopolitical phenomenon of the early modern period, foreign policy context and its changes (relations with European powers, the development of Habsburg-Ottoman conflict, etc.). 4. Confessional situation in the Czech lands, the effects of the European Reformation, re-catholisation issues, the question of conversions, "Baroque" piety, the problem of minorities (Jews, Baptists), the importance of the Enlightenment reforms for this sphere 5. Royal and aristocratic courts as a cultural, artistic and intellectual centre (Rudolph circle, "Czech" Renaissance and "Czech" Baroque, problem of patrons, collecting, the position of the artist in society). 6. The decisive wars of the modern history and their impact on the Czech lands (territorial changes, demographic consequences, economic problems, changes in mentality and value hierarchies, etc.). 7. Transformations of family structures in the modern era (demographic trends, changes in lifestyle of different social strata, the relationship to children and education concepts, changes in the status of women). 8. Modernization, industrialization and urbanization of the Czech lands, changes in their social structure, economic consequences, the main economic theories (mercantilism, physiocracy, economic liberalism). 9. Czech national emancipation movement in context of the time period, the emergence of political parties, major political and social movements (liberalism, nationalism, marxism, socialism, conservatism) 10. Reflection of Czech modern history in the historiography, the Habsburg and Habsburg-lothringen rulers in Czech and European historiography, the problems of historical updates (White Mountain theme, the theme of exile, etc.).
