Course content
The course focuses on the formation and operation of the international system from the 15th century up to the present day. In the first semester basic concepts will be explained and the gradual formation of the Westphalian state system and the colonial empires is described. The core section of lectures, "History of the World System I" will focus on the period from 1648 to the end of the First World War. Emphasis will be placed on facts and the interpretation of basic events in diplomatic relations, including the ramifications of European politics outside Europe. Selected topics: 1. Premodern and moder international system; international relationship participants 2. Centre an periphery - political, geographical and technical factors of the rise of moder international system 3. Europeans in overseas - beginning of colonialism and creating the world system 4. From universalism to the equilibrium - rise of the Peace of Westphalia 5. Europe and the world after the Peace of Westphalia 1648 6. Alliance and the system of "power equilibrium" in 18th century 7. French revolution and Napoleonic Wars 8. Congress of Vienna 9. Crimean War - way to the unification of Italy and Gemrany 10. Easter question in the 19th century 11. Diplomatic relationship in 1871 - 1914 12. Colonialism and economic relationship at the end of 19th century and the beginning of 20th century, changes of the structure of the world political system and rise of new world power - Japan, USA 13. "The Big War" 1914 - 1918 and the ned of European dominance
