Course content
|
The course focuses on the formation and operation of the international system from the 15th century up to the present day. The first semester of the course "History of the World System I" covers the basic terms and an analysis of the formation and operation of the Westphalian state system and the colonial empires up until the end of the First World War. The core section of lectures in the second semester will focus on the 20th century with an emphasis on interpreting the Versailles-Washington system in the interwar period, the functioning of the League of Nations, the policy of appeasement, and the start and course of the Second World War in a global context. The course will also focus on the theme of the world system in the period of bipolar conflict up to the end of the Cold War and events around 1989. Selected topics: 1.
