Course content
1. Paris Peace Conference; Peace Treaty with Germany (Treaty of Versailles); peace treaties with other defeated states; the characteristics of the Versailles system 2. The issue of the collective safety and disarmament during the 1920s; their mutual relation and attempts at their solutions - Esher's plan; Treaty of Mutual Cooperation; Geneva Protocol; Rhinish Treaty of Guarantee (Locarno Pact); Kellogg-Briand Pact 3. The issue of the German reparations and attempts at its solution - the peripeteia of the conference negotiations; occupation of the Ruhr; Dawes' plan; Young's plan; Hoover's moratorium; the Nazi arrival to power 4. The beginnings and the formation of the Fascist dictatorship in Italy 5. Great Britain, France and Germany during the 1920s 6. The Global Economic Crisis and its consequences for Western Europe 7. The Nazi arrival to power in Germany; seizure of power by Adolf Hitler 8. Attempts at solving the issue of collective safety in Europe during the 1930s 9. The peripeteia of European politics between 1933 and 1936 - the Italian proposal at the pact of four powers; introducing compulsory military service in Germany; Anglo-German Naval Agreement; occupation of Rhineland; the Rome-Berlin Axis 10. Spanish Civil War 11. The phenomenon of the Appeasement 12. Europe on the eve of the Second World War 13. Conclusion

learning outcomes
The aim of the seminar is students submitting a timetable of the most significant historical events occurring in Western Europe between 1918 and 1939. They will analyze the most important moments of the given period (the disintegration of the old established order and the establishment of new states, the arrival of the totalitarian movements, the 1930s crisis, the phenomenon of the Appeasement, etc.) and will be introduced to the distinguished personalities of that era.
