Course content
Corrosion problems in industry. Corrosion engineering. Corrosion types and corrosion characteristics of constructional materials. Oxidation and high temperature reactions. Principles of anticorrosive protection. Corrosion testing. Lecture topics: 1. Introduction: subject content, credit conditions, exam requirements. Surface and its properties, interaction of surface with gases 2. Nature of corrosion processes 3. Types of corrosion attack 5. Corrosion of ceramic and composite materials in gases and liquids 6. Relationship between chemical and physical agents affecting corrosion 7. Types of surfaces, their properties and failure 8. Methods of surface protection 9. Types of coatings, their pretreatment and methods of protection 10. Methods of coating metals, plastics and ceramics 11. Organic coatings and coatings 12. Surface treatment of plastics and organic materials 13. Adhesives, directions of surface treatment

Knowledge
The course is aimed to provide students with an understanding of the fundamentals of surface engineering. It describes the characteristic properties of surfaces, their interactions and deterioration caused by their environment and presents protection methods using organic and inorganic coatings. Attention is also paid to the measurement and evaluation of the surface coatings properties.
