| Signing up for this course requires passing the course of public international law in the length of at least one semester. The student should possess at least basic knowledge of public international law. The student is expected to have a sufficient command of the English (French) language and legal English (French) terminology so as to be able to read, understand and orientate oneself in the texts of the case-law of the European Court of Human Rights. |

| This course aims to provide students with a detailed knowledge of how the European human rights protection mechanism has evolved and how it functions. Students shall be acquainted with the structure and activities of the Council of Europe and the functioning of the European Court of Human Rights. They will familiarize themselves with important jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights, including the mechanism of the execution of judgments of the latter, and they will also be acquainted with other regional human rights protection systems as well as with selected issues pertaining to human rights and business. The relevant jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights will be examined to illuminate not only how the substantive provisions of the European Convention on Human Rights have been judicially interpreted and applied but also the impact they have on national legal orders. By the end of this course, students shall be able to demonstrate not only knowledge of the European mechanism of human rights protection but also understanding of the importance of human rights for the rule of law and democracy and of the increasing interface between human rights and business. They shall foremost possess an in-depth knowledge of the law and practice of the European Convention on Human Rights, familiarize themselves with the various bodies of the Council of Europe dealing with human rights protection, and develop analytical approach to the jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights. |
